Resources for 3D modellers

Build a type house that works in the configurator.

Specify shows housebuilders' type houses in 3D. A customer chooses the size, the garage, the roof and the facade, and sees that exact house from outside and inside. The models are built by contracted modellers, to one written standard.

Who this is for

A 3D modeller Specify has commissioned, or is about to. You do not need to know anything about Specify: the standard is written for somebody who has never heard of it, and every requirement in it is a numbered rule you can check your work against.

What Specify commissions

One house per commission, delivered as a single package:

  • the exterior and the interior layout: walls, rooms, doors and windows, without furniture
  • every option the builder offers modelled as a named part, and every finish as a material variant, in one glTF 2.0 file
  • the same house at three quality tiers, from desktop down to phones
  • a two-dimensional floor plan for each layout
  • the editable source files, so the house can be changed without being commissioned again

The standard sets out exactly how each of these is named, sized and delivered.

How delivery works

  1. Read the standard before you quote

The size limits for each tier and the number of combinations a house may have decide how much work a house is. Quote against them, not against a picture.

  2. Build and check as you go

Each rule is numbered so you can check your work against it, and the standard ends with a delivery checklist.

  3. Deliver the package

Specify checks every delivery against the standard rule by rule. A delivery that breaks a rule comes back naming the rule it breaks, so nothing turns on anybody's opinion.

Downloads

Always the current version. Every file is published from the same source Specify's engineers work from, so what you download is what your delivery is checked against.

The standard is published in English only. It is a technical specification, and one version of it is what keeps every delivery comparable.

Questions about the standard

If a rule is unclear, or you cannot see how to meet one, ask before you build around it. Every question answered makes the standard better for the next house.
