Sectors: tailoring and made-to-measure clothing
Made to measure is sold on numbers.
A tailor or a made-to-measure brand sells a garment that does not exist yet. It is sold from measurements, a cloth and a style. Specify asks for each measurement within the limits you work to. The workroom sees it exactly as the customer gave it.
What makes it hard to sell, and how Specify is built for it
Clothing made to measure is sold on measurements and checked by trying it on. A tailor corrects the cut over two or three fittings. Each problem is set beside how Specify is built for it.

Measurements taken at home are often wrong
A study had women measure themselves for mail-order clothing. On average, their measurements were out by about 4 cm. Around the hips they were out by more. An order placed online rests on numbers like these.

Every measurement within your limits
Each measurement is asked for in its own unit, in the steps you work in. It must fall between the smallest and the largest you make. A value outside them is named, never quietly changed. The customer can tell you what they need. A rule can tie a style to a measurement. For example, a cut you only make up to a given size. Inside your limits, the number is taken as given. The fitting is still the check.

From the made-to-measure demo store: each measurement is asked for in centimetres. It must fall between the smallest and the largest the workroom makes. The order lists every one as it was given. In the trade
The garment is cut somewhere else
Made to measure is usually a standard pattern altered to the customer. The measurements, the cloth and the style are sent to a workroom or a factory. The garment arrives weeks later.

The workroom reads what the customer gave
Every configured order line has a production docket. It shows every answer and measurement, with its unit, exactly as the customer gave it. It is for the version of the product they ordered. It can be read on screen or downloaded for the workroom. Both say the same.

Tailoring is priced in hours
The Danish tailors' guild says a tailor prices work in hours. It says a price is hard to give in advance. A dress can take 50 hours.

A quote instead of a price
A garment can be offered for a quote instead of a price. Its page shows no amount and no buy button. The customer asks you for a price instead.
