Sectors: jewellers
A ring is made for one finger and one set of words.
A jeweller makes a ring to a size, in a chosen metal. It often has a stone and an engraving. In Specify, a customer chooses the size within your range. They choose the metal, width, finish and stone from what you offer. They type the words to engrave. So the order reaches you complete, not as a message.
What makes it hard to sell, and how Specify is built for it
A ring made to order is sized, priced and often engraved before it is made. Each problem is set beside how Specify is built for it.

A size is a number on a scale
The international standard defines a ring size as the inner circumference in millimetres. One ring is given in at least six scales, from inner diameter to US sizes. A bare number means nothing without its scale. A wide band needs a larger size. A band set with stones all round is very hard to resize afterwards.

A size within your range, in your scale
A customer chooses a size within your own range. It can be a measurement with your minimum, maximum and step. Or it can come from your list of sizes. The scale is the one you name on the choice. A size outside your range is told so, never rounded to the nearest one.

From the jewellery demo store: the gold, the width and the stone are chosen. The size is given in millimetres within the workshop's range. The words to engrave reach the order as typed. In the trade
An engraving cannot be undone
An engraving is the customer's own words, cut into the metal. EU law takes goods made to the customer's specifications out of the right of withdrawal. Clearly personalised goods are left out too. So an engraved ring generally cannot be sent back. A ring in a standard size, picked from the shop's range, is not personalised. It can usually be returned.

The words exactly as typed
The words to engrave reach the order exactly as the customer typed them. They are shown back in the summary and the basket before anyone pays. Handwriting or a fingerprint to engrave can be uploaded as a picture. It travels with the order.

The metal and the stone set the price
Gold, silver and platinum have reference prices set every day. In 2025, gold reached one all-time high after another. A diamond's value is its carat, colour, clarity and cut together. So two stones of the same weight can differ in price. One may have to be found for the order.

Every choice priced, or priced by you
Metal, width, finish and stone are choices, each with the price you set for it. You change it when you decide. Some pieces you would rather price yourself. For example, a stone found for this order, or a design for one person. Such a piece comes to you as a request. Everything is chosen, and you give the price.
